Energy Problems & Future Perspective - by Jerry de Leeuw (2008)
"Energy controls an important part of our lives. Scarcity controls the markets for commodities and energy products, and this scarcity sends prices rocketing. Governments implement policies based on supply, quality and price, but because of the split that exists between international ties and segmentation, it is not easy to achieve these objectives. Concentration of power and geo-political interests are evident and tangible in all segments of the energy chains. Market power, information asymmetry and monopoly positions are characteristic elements in today's energy sector. Pressure sometimes mounts so high at an international level that it leads to military tension.

In addition to this, developments in the field of environment are extremely poignant. The climate is changing and the demand for control continues to increase. The world can no longer shrink from energy transition; alternative energy sources must eventually provide the solution. Necessity is indeed high, but the transition process will take years. Acknowledgement and recognition precede energy transition and will lead to a revised way of thinking and revised priorities. Governmental intervention in implementing new policy is essential, as is the concluding of international agreements. It goes without saying that the necessary technological developments will cost a great deal of money, and individual activities can severely threaten a country's competitive position.
